The discussion so far has focused on component parts, assuming they will be assembled at a plant. An alternative is an off-the-shelf, ready to plug and play molded solution. Finished cable harnesses are offered by 3M in a choice of lengths and configurations. The socket connectors feature the same IDC technology, but overmolding the termination with thermoplastic resin makes for a very robust one-piece product. This is ideally suited to medical equipment applications, such as patient monitors, or factory automation equipment, where there may be constant movement or vibration.
