Timing and wave shaping applications use capacitors to change or modify a circuit over a time period. Remember that a capacitor can be used as a bucket of energy; storing that energy like a battery. This bucket of energy can be dumped into the circuit at a specifically determined time interval. The capacitor then recharges and discharges again. When designing a timing or wave shaping application, the engineer will carefully chose a capacitor based on how quickly the capacitor can recharge. On this slide the image to the right is a delayed windshield wiper which is a good example of a timing application.
