Networking refers to a system where multiple devices can communicate with each other. There are several kinds of networks that are commonly used; point-to-point, star, mesh and tree. The differences between these are outside the scope of this note, but any networking aspects are part of the system definition. Networking can be used to extend the range of the system by relaying data through several devices. When data integrity is critical a mesh style network can determine the end to end path of the data packets to ensure that they arrive at the appropriate destination. This type of network is extremely complicated and requires a larger processor and more memory than simple networks. Any networking requirements of a system should be defined early so that the appropriate hardware can be selected.
