In summary, there are many benefits to replacing electrolytic capacitors with MLCCs. From a technical standpoint, the MLCCs have much better electrical performance such as frequency response. From a reliability standpoint, MLCCs have superior long term reliability. Finally, from a manufacturing standpoint, MLCCs are easier to work with due to advantages such as no polarity and no MSL sensitivity. Some of the rules of thumb discussed in this module will aid in optimization of electolytic replacement activity.
