Most systems employing a CPU do not operate on a fixed power mode. In practice, it is common for them to have multiple power modes. For simplicity, two power modes are shown here, but the analysis can easily be extended. The point of this slide and the next few slides is to talk about power modes and to gain an understanding of the power or current consumption specs in each mode and how they impact the overall consumption of the system. The following slides reference current as a spec since many electronic designers are focused on current dissipation and are familiar with specs on current, like sleep and hibernate current. In this plot, the curves represent possible profiles of current usage in a system. For purposes of discussion, the maximum current mode will be referred to as the active current mode and the minimum current mode will be referred to as the sleep current mode. Decreasing the duty cycle, active current, or sleep current can further reduce the overall average current consumption in the system.
