An example of a complete architectural change is the way digital cores are powered. In modern, small geometry processes, transistors often have a higher working frequency than required due to optimized yield, moderate operating temperature and guard banding. By using a method pioneered by National Semiconductor called Adaptive Voltage Scaling, a significant reduction in energy consumption can be realized as shown in the graph here. The implementation of this technology does require architectural changes and must be considered at the beginning of a design and incorporated into the digital core.
