In summary, fuses protect against overcurrent or short circuit events by melting their elements and opening the circuit. When determining the proper fuse for an application, there are several parameters to be considered. First, fuses must be used below their specified voltage rating. Also, fuse amp ratings need to take into account ambient operating temperature and must be derated accordingly. Furthermore, the fuse interrupting rating must always exceed the maximum available fault current. Additionally, the fuse type should match the device load types: FAST-ACTING for resistive and critical circuits, and TIME-DELAY where inrush currents are present (inductive and/or capacitive loads). Finally, always consult the manufacturer’s data sheets for the correct ratings and agency approvals for the application and the markets into which the product is to be sold.
