Rather than actively harnessing motion to improve a device’s performance, an alternative is to passively monitor motion activity in order to understand if a device is unusually or excessively handled. One potential application for this type of detection would be for warranty purposes. Large shock sensing modules have been in use for some time. These brick-size modules were clamped to the side of a shipping crate or perhaps onto high value equipment in a factory. They monitored shock activity, which could be retrieved and analyzed later. The ADIS16240 device performs the same function, but with the iSensor integration, it is now in a tiny 12mm package, which can easily be embedded in a wider range of equipment. Implementation is as simple as adding power and setting a threshold level of interest over the SPI port. The user has complete configurability over the trigger source, number of buffers versus length, and how much pre-event versus post event data is captured. The ADIS16240 monitors for shock on 3-axes and has an embedded user-configurable capture buffer, which will capture and hold events of interest with time stamp and temperature data as well. The device is also optimized for low power, battery operation.
