In the case of applications like power tools where the discharge rates can be much higher than the charge rates, the bq77910 can be configured to operate in a split discharge path implementation. For example, if the peak discharge rate is 40 to 50 A, but the peak charge rate is only 2 to 3 A, this variation allows the system designer to minimize cost compared to the series FET configuration. This is because a smaller, less expensive FET can be used in the charge path, rather than designing both FETs to tolerate the worst case load condition. This also minimizes heat/power loss in the application.
