Putting this all together, it is now time look at some applications.  In wind power, with remote installation meaning high service costs, reliability is probably the most important driver, whether in a large-scale wind farm or a single “domestic” installation. Historically many wind power systems have used capacitors with voltages around 500Vdc, but today the “sweetspot” is in the voltage range 600Vdc to 1350Vdc depending on the output AC voltage from the alternator. This is because higher voltages are increasingly used to reduce power loss in the alternator and converter of the windmill, significantly improving system efficiency. The smaller, low voltage capacitors in the transformer must also achieve high reliability, and the AVX segmented technology applied to all of its products ensures this.
